Empirical Rule: Example Problem with More Extreme Than

An example of the application of the Empirical Rule to a problem that asks for the area more extreme than given boundaries.

1. A factory produces brass fittings whose diameters are normally distributed with a mean diameter of 0.2502 in and a standard deviation of 0.0033 in. As part of the quality assurance process, the factory will reject any fittings whose diameters are more than 2 standard deviations from the mean. What percent of the fittings will be rejected?
